Leadership Livingston Brings Personal Finance Class to High Schools

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Leadership Livingston brings Dave Ramsey Personal Finance Course to Livingston Parish High Schools

Students in Livingston Parish High Schools have access to Foundations in Finance personal finance course because of Livingston Leadership group Common Cents for Students. The group of six Leadership participants wrote grants to purchase the program and promoted the opportunity at Walker High School.

Common Cents for Students members all agreed that personal finance know-how is an essential skill for any successful person and were passionate about Livingston Parish Students having the opportunity to learn those skills. Walker High Principal, Jason St. Pierre agreed to allow the course to be taught at Walker.

Walker mayor and Common Cents group member, Jimmy Watson, said he is proud that the course was offered in Walker, “Principal St. Pierre is inspired in the same way we are to prepare students for the real world. I am very happy that our group could bring this class to Parish high school students through Walker High.”

After securing a grant to pay for the class, Common Cents members participated in Elective Day at Walker High to educate students on the opportunity and have fun giving out candy and holding a book giveaway. There was a significant level of interest from the students, so the group came back for career day to share more information with the school.

Monica Ragusa taught 18 students at Walker High school this spring semester and 88 students are already signed up to take the course in the 2018-2019 school year at several Livingston Parish high schools including Doyle High. The class is an elective that any student can take whether they are applying to a four-year university or participating in the jump start program.

The Common Cents group included Lloyd Andel, III, Randy Pastuszek, Ashleigh Vasquez, Jimmy Watson, Leah Smith and Tiffany Sicard. Sicard was chosen by the group for the Chamber of Commerce’s Above & Beyond award for her dedication to the project.
